What is the Pupil Premium?

The pupil premium grant (PPG) is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers; and to support children and young people with parents in the regular armed forces.

How do you Know if your Child can Access This Funding?

From September 2014 all children who are in reception, year 1 or year 2 in a state-funded school will be offered a free healthy school lunch. From January 2015 all children under five will receive free milk and all children in receipt of free schools meals (FSM) will be offered free milk.

Those children who are five and over and not in receipt of FSM will be able to buy milk through the schools payment scheme.

Pupil Premium funding is given to schools based on eligibility for Free School Meals over the last 6 years (excluding the infant free school meals provision). Your child will be eligible for Free School Meals (and additional Pupil Premium funding for the school to support your child) if you or your partner are receiving any of the following benefits:

  • Income Support.
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income of £16,190 or less, as assessed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs

Why Register?

Registering could raise money for your child’s school.  Registering for free meals and pupil premium could raise an extra £1,300 for your child’s school, to fund valuable support like extra tuition, additional teaching staff or after school activities.

It is therefore important to sign up for free school meals/pupil premium as this involves more than a free school lunch and the will receive extra funding to ensure your child gets additional support.
